Aboriginal Education

The Catholic Schools Office is committed to providing support to schools to celebrate and promote Aboriginal Education across the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

The educational achievements of Aboriginal students will be promoted by:

  • Providing safe and supportive learning environments which enhance the self esteem and cultural identity of Aboriginal students
  • Providing curriculum, teaching and assessment programs which are challenging and culturally appropriate
  • Providing intensive literacy and numeracy programs as part of whole school approaches
  • Encouraging and supporting staff to develop knowledge understanding and appreciation of the educational and cultural needs of Aboriginal students

System personnel are employed to support schools to provide professional learning and development including:

  • Understanding Aboriginal Culture
  • Aboriginal Spirituality
  • The history of Aboriginal people in Australia
  • Working towards Reconciliation
  • Aboriginal perspectives across the Curriculum.
