St Joseph’s, Charlestown: Annual Writing Fair

30th September, 2024

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Charlestown hosted their annual Writing Fair on Thursday 2

This year’s theme, Spooky Stories sparked the students’ creativity, and it was amazing to see them having fun with the theme including the many installations situated throughout the school grounds in the day to inspire the school community.

St Joseph’s Charlestown’s goal is to make writing an exciting and enjoyable experience, where students can truly express themselves. When writing is explicit and meaningful, students’ overall engagement improves, and it was wonderful to see their bright and smiling faces, proud and eager to share their creations. Ex St Joseph’s Charlestown students, now attending St Mary’s Gateshead, were also in attendance, coming back to support the current students, furthering the strong connection between the schools.

St Joseph’s Charlestown’s improvement in writing has been reflected in its NAPLAN results over the past few years, which are above the National Standard. Students are now demonstrating stronger skills in areas such as structure, grammar, and creativity, contributing to these positive results. This highlights St Joseph’s Charlestown’s commitment to fostering literacy and building confident writers across all year stages.

The Writing Fair wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of the parents, teachers, and volunteers at St Joseph’s. Special thanks to Wendy Manning for the fantastic giant spider installation, which inspired the students and brought excitement to the day.
